Project

Richardson ISD Hamilton Park Pacesetter Magnet

Celebrating a School Community’s Heritage

Dallas, Texas, USA

The Challenge

Richardson Independent School District (ISD) asked HKS to design a connector between an existing school and auditorium in the North Dallas neighborhood of Hamilton Park. By enabling students to move between buildings without going outside, the project aimed to create a safer, smoother, more integrated campus experience.

Designing the connector entailed several challenges. Existing drawings were limited, and unknown utility conditions required ongoing problem-solving. The project was funded using remaining capital from higher-priority renovations; the fixed $10 million budget necessitated thoughtful decisions and a clear focus on essential needs.

A key objective of the project was to honor the legacy of Hamilton Park, a historically Black community that faced displacement in the 1960s. To achieve this, the team sought input from long-time residents and alumni to help shape the design and reinforce the site’s historical and cultural significance.

The Design Solution

Three core principles guided the project: improving safety, celebrating the school’s identity and revitalizing existing facilities.

In response to site constraints, the design team integrated a stormwater flume beneath the new connector. This solution allowed the existing drainage system on campus to continue uninterrupted while supporting the new structure.

HKS led multiple engagement sessions with teachers and staff to establish project priorities and determine how funds should be allocated. While the project team set expectations early on that likely not all requests could be accommodated, the final design addressed nearly all identified priorities, with plumbing upgrades being the only exception. Additional enhancements included new ceilings throughout the building and a complete update to room signage, contributing to a refreshed and cohesive campus environment.

Beyond making physical improvements to the campus, the design team strove to create a space that reflects the school’s identity and history. The team collaborated closely with a school-led committee to incorporate historical graphics and artifacts into the connector, making it a meaningful transition space rather than a simple passageway.

The Design Impact

The renovations and additions at Hamilton Park are making a meaningful and lasting difference by helping extend the life of a 71-year-old school while strengthening its connection to the community it serves. The new, enclosed connector provides a safe, weather-protected path between buildings, improving daily movement for students and staff and reducing security and supervision concerns.

Just as important, the project helped preserve and share the school’s history. The school’s first ten years are documented through a graphic timeline and integrated displays in the corridor, giving students daily opportunities to learn about their roots and heritage. A historic marker placed at the front of the campus further recognizes the school as an important community asset within Hamilton Park.

Inside the building, upgrades to lighting, flooring, ceilings and acoustics created brighter, more comfortable learning spaces. These improvements support student focus and overall well-being while refreshing classrooms and common areas. Together, the renovations honor the school’s past while ensuring it remains a welcoming, functional place for future generations.
