Florida International University CasaCuba CasaCuba Creates New Home for Cuban Culture
Miami, Florida, USA
The Challenge
With the creation of CasaCuba, Florida International University (FIU) sought to build a gateway and vibrant community hub where Cuban culture can be explored and celebrated. The central location allows CasaCuba to act as a welcoming gathering place where diverse audiences can interact and collaborate, a platform for dialogue that enriches both the university experience and the local community. CasaCuba holds the transformative power to provide a dedicated space for crucial political and cultural discussions in a supportive, constructive environment, and it is intended to be a place where people can engage openly, share their stories, and mobilize for change. It will nurture collaboration and a community ethos that empowers voices, ultimately fostering progress and unity within the Cuban diaspora and beyond.
The Design Solution
Before HKS began designing CasaCuba, the team comprehensively explored Cuban history, architecture, culture, and identity to help ensure that the project’s design would be rooted in authenticity and respect. The goal was to create a building and spaces that would be a true reflection of the Cuban experience, shaped by the struggles, triumphs and the creativity of Cuban and Cuban American people.
The HKS team conducted extensive community outreach to ensure the project reflected the needs and aspirations of its future users. During town hall meetings, focus groups, and cultural workshops with local Cuban American residents, leaders and artists, the team collected input on cultural identity, historical significance, and community expectations for the space. Interactive design charrettes allowed participants to voice their ideas on how the center could best serve as a hub for cultural preservation, education and social gathering. This collaborative process set the stage for a thoughtful and cohesive design approach, resulting in a space that honors the past and fosters engagement and connection for future generations.
The design also reflects the rich history and unique climate of Cuba and the resiliency of Cuban communities. HKS conducted analysis of an existing building to understand its context and position within the FIU campus and its relation to the overarching community. By examining pedestrian flows, sun paths, and prevailing wind patterns, the team made design decisions regarding shading and orientation that ensure outdoor spaces remain comfortable and inviting throughout the day. Additionally, understanding wind patterns guided the placement of architectural elements that facilitate natural ventilation and enhance climate resilience.
The Design Impact
CasaCuba stands as a beacon for the community, serving as a vibrant cultural hub that bridges the gap between the FIU campus and the surrounding neighborhood. Its strategic position within the FIU context enhances its role as a vital third space, fostering connections between students, faculty, and community members. This central location allows CasaCuba to act as a welcoming gathering place where diverse audiences can come together to celebrate Cuban heritage, engage in cultural programming, and participate in community events. CasaCuba is more than a building — it is a living expression of a rich cultural heritage.
