Case Study

Botanic Sanctuary Resort's Idyllic Mountain Setting Provides Tranquil, Relaxing Destination for Visitors

Sichuan, China

The Challenge

Engaged by the owner/developer of the Six Senses Resort at Qing Cheng Mountain, a Unesco World Heritage site as the seat of the Taoist philosophy and home to important Panda conservation, HKS designers faced the task of designing a sister property as a hot springs destination to compliment and share amenities with the existing resort and spa. The client desired uniquely iconic architecture with a deep connection to the natural environment and the attraction of the mountain, while maintaining an extremely private realm.

The Design Solution

The design for the Botanic Sanctuary was inspired by the existing spectacular setting, views to the mountains and water, and a hierarchy of amenity spaces surrounding a lake. Indoor/outdoor living was the driving force. The mountain, dotted with hundreds of Taoist and Buddhist temples, draws people from around the world to immerse themselves in the practice of the philosophy, learn more of its origins, visit the Panda sanctuary and dine on authentic Szechuan cuisine. The precepts of Taoism generated a design narrative deeply related to nature, the inner harmonies of the universe, the elements, and the need for balance in the world around us. Taoism combined with the art of tea created a ritualistic environment seen through a contemporary lens. It is a place of transformation and relaxation. Inspired by a combination of modern art and ancient folklore, the design strives for a minimalistic approach to living gracefully.

The Design Impact

Botanic Sanctuary is situated on the main circulation road to visit Qing Cheng Mountain. By providing retail and gallery space, and a rest area all open to the public at the mouth of the road, the resort provides an important connection to the community and helps bring attention to the history and ancient culture so that more visitors can benefit and learn the importance of conservation.
