HKS Career Day: Let’s Talk About Jobs in the Design Industry
Many of us in the design world – from the architects to the writers to the professional development specialists — took looping or meandering paths to our current jobs. The journey between school and a dream career isn’t usually a straight line.
A global design firm, HKS employs more than 1,200 professionals whose fields of expertise run the gamut from architecture and interior design to psychology and management to marketing, photography and other fields. This summer, HKS interviewed 13 of our colleagues from across the firm on Instagram Live so that students watching at home could learn about how these professionals got here and why they do what they do.
Interested in architecture? We partnered with Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust — a London organization that helps young people from disadvantaged backgrounds pursue the career of their choice — to create a virtual booklet titled “Getting into architecture.” The booklet gives students a basic understanding of what architects do and offers an overview of the kinds of jobs available in the construction industry. HKS employees add a human touch by explaining their roles and training. The booklet also features interactive QR codes that students can scan with their mobile devices to explore 3D panoramic views of HKS projects.
This tool also describes the routes to become a registered architect in the United Kingdom. For details on how to become a licensed architect in the United States, visit the Destination Architect guide by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB).
We can help your students discover design. Are you a teacher planning a Career Day? HKS has employees in 24 offices around the world, but we don’t need to share a city to connect.
