AIA Virginia names HKS Design Director Nick Cooper as Recipient of Distinguished Achievement Award
HKS Principal and Design Director Nick Cooper is the 2021 recipient of AIA Virginia’s Award for Distinguished Achievement, one of the organization’s top honors for architects. The award recognizes individuals whose work in design, practice, education or professional service have created lasting impact in Virginia communities and the design industries.
Since joining HKS in 2014, Cooper has led numerous award-winning design and community building projects. He currently co-directs Citizen HKS, the firm’s public-interest design initiative, which provides pro-bono design and volunteer services in communities around the world including Richmond, Virginia where Cooper is based.
Cooper is deeply committed to strengthening the architecture profession and the communities it serves through leadership and mentorship. As 2020 President of AIA Richmond, he led numerous COVID response efforts to support chapter members as well as residents and business owners. He also serves as chair of AIA Virginia’s Emerging Leaders in Architecture Program and continues to foster the rising generation of designers as a board member for Richmond’s ACE Mentor Program, as a mentor with his alma mater, Virginia Tech, and with ongoing board involvement at AIA Richmond.
“It’s an honor to be part of this profession,” Cooper said. “And I’m humbled to be included with a list of truly influential people that have served and continue to impact our Commonwealth of Virginia and beyond.”
