More and more often, there is increased demand for facilities that support scientific study and education through design that is tailored to specific fields of study, unique techniques, and educational requirements. To move science forward, that demand must be met. We are meeting it.
The Center for BrainHealth in Dallas, its mission to understand, protect and heal the brain, is improving lives today with leading-edge scientific exploration that is changing how the public views brain function. In the design of The Center’s new Brain Performance Institute, HKS was trusted to deliver an instantly recognizable building that would reflect the groundbreaking research happening inside.

The Vision and Design
Our designers took into consideration the unique needs of the wide range of patients who will visit the facility, from children to athletes to soldiers, and created a design that is dynamic by giving the illusion of movement. A theoretical abstraction of brain waves in three-dimensional form, the undulating exterior shading devices are parametrically tuned to performance-based specifications related to solar heat gain, glare, daylight harvesting and views, creating a sculptural effect around what otherwise would be a traditional glass box. The relationship between the building’s indoor and outdoor environments excite the visitor, while a variety of seating areas offer various levels of interaction, ranging from extremely social to quiet and contemplative.
