Austin, Texas

Weird and revered. Eclectic; bohemian. Texas’ Capitol City has many monikers and admirers, and HKS wanted to bring this spirit to the design of the JW Marriott Austin. Articulated through bold architectural expression, the JW offers guests and locals alike a unique and authentic experience that embodies the soul of Austin, reinterpreted in a new and vibrant way.

A downtown hotel merging urbanity and nature, the JW Marriott Austin contributes to the city’s transformational urban growth with an architectural landmark response that reinforces the Congress Avenue gateway toward the State Capitol in the distance. Designed to be an engaging community experience, the project interacts with both its built and natural surrounding environments. Currently the largest hotel in Austin, it is also one of the greenest in this eco-forward city.

The Vision and Design

The project is inspired by Austin’s rugged and beautiful natural landscape, which serves the local community as a common playground that unifies the city’s diverse and eclectic population. Extending the outdoor theme, the hotel was designed to enhance the pedestrian realm, creating a livable, walkable community; a lively, pedestrian-dominant “great street.”

The outdoors and the connection to the environment is shared experience for the diverse people of the city to come together and celebrate this unique place. Immersing oneself in the exceptional natural landscapes in and around Austin is a communal event. The hotel design is a confluence of the influences of the natural landscape and local vernacular that define the Austin experience with modern form and materials of the urban context, expressed through the hotel’s weathered skin, tectonic surface, vegetated plane, and roof deck pool (water element).
