JinJiang, a bustling historic port city of 2 million located on the Jin River and bordering the Taiwan Strait of the East China Sea, is a business and key manufacturing hub, home to many national and international brand apparel and footwear makers – in fact, Jinjiang is known as China’s footwear and sportswear capital, producing a whopping 20 percent of the world’s sports shoes.
JinJiang was a historical port in its time and remains an active Chinese port from which Zheng He, the legendary pioneer of the sea, embarked on great ocean explorations. The natural forces of the water inspire the design of the new JinJiang Exhibition Center complex – the power of the ocean and its striking fluid forms, combined with the evocative beauty of folding silk, are the inspiration for the exterior and interior forms of the exhibition center architecture.
Since the construction program of the complex calls for a significant amount of exhibition space, requirements of the user population and vehicular and service traffic were a significant factor of the design and layout of the exhibition center. The design vision is to express these super scale design parameters compellingly and elegantly in the context of the new master plan.
The JinJiang Exhibition Center is the centerpiece of a new town district of residential, commercial, and civic uses. The project contains hotel, retail, and park plazas allowing the facility to be operational at all hours of the day and night. Site organization of the project is designed to smoothly manage very large numbers of people and vehicles in and around the project. Since the project is seen from all angles and is to be the centerpiece of the community, all back of house and semi-truck loading operations are completely concealed within the building.
Exhibition halls are stacked in a two-level configuration allowing room for landscape park and plaza areas along all street frontages. Three lower exhibition halls have direct access to truck loading areas and three upper level halls are accessed by large service elevators. Movable walls in the halls on each level can be reconfigured to create one expansive exhibition hall on each level.
Exhibit center visitors to will arrive as pedestrians from the new train station to the west or by bus and car. The prominent southern entry and exhibition plaza is a dramatic destination for vehicle arrival or by foot from the train station via the boulevard parkway. The plaza is conceived as a grand and dramatic sculpture with large openings to provide access and light and air to shops and smaller meeting venues below. Unexpectedly and spectacularly, the habitable plaza surface slopes up dramatically to become the exterior wall and roof enclosure of the exhibition halls and pre-function space. Clerestory glass walls provide natural light to the exhibition halls and are a beacon to attract the crowds arriving at the facility from the train station.
A 28,000 square-foot, 5-star hotel tower with dedicated arrival area energizes the north side of the project site and provides a vertical element to the project massing. Scheduled for completion in 2016, the JinJiang Exhibition Center is conceived as a highly efficient yet beautiful and dramatic centerpiece of this new JinJiang town district.
