Esperanza, An Auberge Resort
Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

In the aftermath of hurricane Odile, HKS was tasked with restoring and renovating Los Cabos’ beloved Esperanza resort in six months. Instead of simply restoring it, the team transformed it with new palapas, architectural details, plazas and sculptural landmarks. Buildings, structure and pools were refinished in the natural colors of the landscape and sea. All millwork, furniture, lighting, accessories and textiles were custom designed and crafted in Mexico, lending Esperanza (which means “hope” in Spanish) a new sense of artistry and romance. The resort was ranked a Readers’ Choice top western Mexico resort by Conde Nast Traveler in 2016.

The Vision and Design

Guests arrive atop a staircase overlooking a dramatic vista of the sea and shoreline below. The entry plaza is arrayed in a fresh gray palette, with intricate tile patterns. And, beyond is a shining bonfire of sculptural metallic driftwood.

The reception is a tiny jewel box on the arrival plaza. Mirrors with patterns that spell the word “hope” in Morse Code, greet the guest as a backdrop to the host desks. Custom leather chairs invite guests to relax and take in the view.

Shady trellises line the entry, while pots of “Esperanza” trumpet vines and native plants punctuate the journey. The sparkle of hundreds of candles adds to the settings’ allure.

Palapas nestled into the cliffside invite guests to drink and dine. Ripples of stone and tile lead to the restaurant and bar, with its artisanal pendants of hand-blown glass, ceramic, metal and rope. Hand-made metallic bronze ceramic tile and barnacles clad the walls and bar. Mexican-crafted furnishings of woven leather and wood invite guests to linger.

In The Lounge Bar, hand-made, ceramic, agave-shaped lanterns create a soft glow. Metallic driftwood is draped with hand-blown glass bubbles in liquid shades of blue. The antique bar front is clad in shades of the faded deep sea.

A lantern-lit path leads to a blue guest room door surrounded by bougainvillea. Inside, a warm glow suffuses the dramatic bed with its backdrop of handwoven leather and canopy of soft netting. Antique mirrors, embroidered pillows and artifacts showcase the beauty of traditional craft. The spa bath includes floating double vanities and hand-crafted, ceramic accessories. A spacious wet room with tub and shower opens to the terrace and plunge pool beyond.
