Embodying Erlanger Health System’s goal to improve community health and address the full spectrum of care, HKS’ design for the Erlanger East expansion celebrates design for wellbeing.
Opened in 2016, the Erlanger East expansion includes a new surgical center and patient tower. The project’s 88,000 square feet of new space and nearly 18,000-square feet of renovated space include a 58-bed tower, four operating rooms, a post-anesthesia care unit, a cath lab-therapeutic suite, and pre- and post-op areas. Expanded food service operations include a demonstration kitchen for classes on healthy cooking and eating. Sustainable products and energy-efficient LED lights are used where possible, and a reclaimed wood feature wall is repeated on each floor to serve as a wayfinding element.

Chattanooga’s unique and distinct character, particularly its rich regional landscape which includes the Appalachian Mountains and Tennessee River, served as inspiration for the project’s interior design. Natural materials throughout the building convey a serene, familiar and comfortable feel. Biophilic strategies such as incorporating monolithic porcelain tiles that look like natural stone are used in the public spaces and extend out into the landscape. Artwork produced by local artists is featured throughout the facility to further the regional connection.
Outside, patients and the community alike can enjoy a mile-long walking trail that weaves through the campus and its gardens. Active recreational amenities such as playgrounds, a putting green, volleyball and basketball courts dot the landscape.
