A tribute to women and children, the world-class Danat Al Emarat Women’s and Children’s Hospital will be a destination of excellence not only in the Middle East, but throughout the world. Inspired by the forms of a flowing veil, water and sculpted sand, the 484,000-square-foot, 6-story facility is a healthcare landmark and celebration of life.

The Vision and Design

Danat Al Emarat Women’s and Children’s Hospital was designed to be at the medical forefront, with the latest technology supporting the most advanced surgical and diagnostic procedures for women and children, while enhancing the patient experience. The vision was to provide world-class, patient-centered medicine with the hospitality experience of a 5-star hotel with premium amenities that soothe, honor and nurture.

The exterior design of the hospital reflects the dramatic contrasts of the environment, climate, geography and culture. The tower is inspired by the feminine fluid forms of a graceful, flowing veil, mothers, water and sand sculpted by the wind. It rises gracefully as a memorable and meaningful landmark sculpture. The radiating curves form a flowing veil, embracing and celebrating the cherished lives within. Architecture meets the sky with a gently curving gesture of beauty, elegance and dignity.  Water embraces the base of the building and flows inside, fluidly connecting outdoor and interior spaces. Elegant date palms punctuate the landscape and the atrium, as a familiar and comforting counterbalance to the soaring scale of the tower and the atrium. Sculpture and plinth are illuminated as a modern lantern, inviting the women and children of Abu Dhabi and the United Arab Emirates to Danat Al Emarat.

The dramatic atrium rises from an oval womb shape, cradling the energy of life, recalled and reinterpreted throughout the facility. Sunlight dancing through the exterior skin creates a play of light and shadow, and lighting integrated into the curving grid creates a nighttime light show.

Patient rooms could be easily mistaken for luxurious rooms found in any 5-star hotel in Abu Dhabi. Mothers’ beds are oriented to healing views encircled by family seating for comfort and care. VIP Suites have adjoining accommodations for fathers to work and dine with a screened kitchenette and a powder room.

Royal suites have gracious foyers as well as family living and dining areas for men and women, elegantly separated to respond to cultural expectations. The central gallery buffers the mother’s private realm, an expansive retreat of comfort and care. The father’s sleep room has daylight, views, work area and a private bath.

The hospital features five operating suites, cardiopulmonary suite, emergency department and ICU. A special focus is given to maternity services, including a high-risk pregnancy unit, LDR rooms, mother and baby unit and a 15-bassinet NICU. Additional facilities include primary care and specialty clinics, advanced imaging and diagnostics center.
