Tom Harvey, FAIA, MPH, FACHA, LEED AP, has been named HKS Denver office director. He is responsible for overseeing client relations as well as developing the firm’s practice in Denver and the Mountain States.
Throughout his 35-year healthcare architecture career, he has influenced the healthcare environment with design research studies that reveal how architecture affects safety and patient visibility; improves patient outcomes and satisfaction; increases operating efficiencies; reduces nurse walking distances; simplifies design; and reduces costs — while providing the highest standard of care.
“I’ve had the pleasure of working with Tom for 25 years,” said Dan Noble, president and CEO, HKS, Inc. “He is a pioneer and a self-driven guy, opening our Los Angeles office, starting our research practice and launching our advisory practice. His wide path of leadership has accrued important credentials, including Evidence-Based Design Accreditation and Certification, board-certification as a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Architects and national recognition as a member of the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects.”
Harvey founded the Center for Advanced Design Research and Evaluation (CADRE) to develop and implement relevant original research in the areas of architectural and engineering design solutions having an impact on end users, including occupant well-being and user effectiveness; operational performance; and sustainability of the built environment.
“I’m excited to join the business leaders in the Denver area who have their own brand of innovative and resourceful problem-solving perspectives. The civic leadership and business climate over the last three decades in the Denver metro area is exciting, having turned a region under extreme economic duress in the ‘80s into a model, unique urban environment that other cities seek to emulate.” Harvey said. “I want to lend my national knowledge and insight in creating innovative, performance-driven environments for healthcare in the region where I have considerable experience, including Colorado, California, Arizona, Oregon, Montana and Utah.”
Tom frequently shares his ideas and philosophy through speaking at national annual industry conferences, including the Healthcare Design Conference (HCD), the ASHE/AIA Healthcare Planning and Design Conference (PDC), the International Design and Health Conference and the Environment Design Research Association (EDRA) Conference. Harvey also informs the profession by reporting his findings in scholarly peer-reviewed journals such as Healthcare Environments Research and Design (HERD), Environment & Behavior and the AIA Journal of Research, as well as in respected healthcare trade journals.
