Bernita Beikmann, principal with HKS, has been appointed to the American Institute of Architects (AIA)-Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) joint committee.

For the past 50 years, the AIA-AGC Joint Committee has provided a forum for the design and construction community to discuss pertinent issues related to the construction industry. The committee’s goal is to promote cooperation among all the participants and to develop tools that support a collaborative process.

"We are very pleased to have someone with Bernita's level of expertise in lean and Integrated Project Delivery serving on the Joint Committee,” said Thompson E. Penney, FAIA, co-chair of the AIA-AGC Joint Committee. “One of the committee's ongoing discussions focuses on the importance of early collaboration and efficiency in the design and construction process, and we look forward to her presence and insight.”

Beikmann, director of lean strategy for HKS, has built a reputation as a successful advocate for lean planning, design and construction. Her passion for these principles, coupled with furthering her education, has placed her in a position to encourage many organizations and companies to implement lean process improvement. She has shared her expertise with more than 12 organizations and conferences in the past two years – including national Lean Construction Institute speaking engagements. She played a key role in establishing the Lean Construction Institute’s Dallas/Fort Worth chapter and has participated in the A/E/C CEO Forum’s Integrated Project Delivery Assured Program.

Beikmann also guides project teams in applying lean principles to design and construction. She facilitates pull planning efforts, target value design, documentation and problem solving through A3 reports, on project teams as well as within HKS. Beikmann’s experience with lean design began
with her assignment as chief designer for Texoma Medical Center.

She implemented lean Integrated Project Delivery to complete the new facilities under budget and on time. Since that time, she has worked on additional key lean design projects throughout the United States including Riley Hospital for Children in Indiana; Martin Memorial Health System Tradition Medical Center in Florida; The George Washington University Hospital surgery expansion in Washington, D.C.; and the Akron Children’s Hospital tower addition in Akron, Ohio.

HKS, Inc. is a leading architectural design firm ranked among the top six architectural engineering firms, according to Building Design+Construction magazine.
