HKS proves its commitment to sustainable design once again this year, ranking No. 8 on Engineering News-Record’s (ENR) Top 100 Green Design Firms in the United States, moving up a notch from No. 9 last year. Both the firm’s healthcare and sports groups are ranked No. 3 on the 2014 lists by sector.

According to the ENR article, green and sustainable design techniques are becoming the mainstay in the construction industry, with some clients willing to push the green envelope. The growing market for green design is clear in the results of the list, showing a 12.3 percent increase over 2012 in domestic design revenue from projects registered with and actively seeking certification from third-party ratings groups. The Top 100 was up 18.2 percent in revenue from projects outside the U.S.

“Public demand is driving some of the increase in the market for sustainable design,” says Kirk Teske, HKS COO and chief sustainability officer. “The competitive nature of real estate also has increased client demand for sustainable design. Smart developers are leveraging traditional third-party certifications and actively seeking the next big thing in sustainable design to differentiate themselves in the marketplace.”

“I expect clients to seek ways to differentiate themselves from their competitors – let’s call it ‘out- greening’ – by pursuing new or stepped-up certification systems,” Teske adds.

The list, published in the August 18, 2014 issue, is based on revenue for design services generated in 2013 from projects actively seeking certification from major third-party environmental standards or rating organizations such as the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED certification system.  Click here to view the full list.
