The new London office is beautiful. The wall in the picture above is created from reclaimed wood custom designed for the space wall and the graphics around the office were done in house. The space spans between the two top floors of the building. Reception is on the fifth floor and the studio is on the fourth. There is an outdoor deck off the kitchen, a beautiful place to have lunch on a sunny day.
My first week was incredible. I’ve learned so much working on a series of high schools with the education group. From program layouts to design strategies to presentation techniques. I’m taking notice of how these small scale project strategies can be applied and benefit the larger scale education project I work on back in Miami.
I arrived in Dallas on Monday April 8th. Zack Lamp picked me up from the airport and welcomed me to Dallas. Zack is the man. He was one of the first fellows to do a “test run” for the program by going to Shanghai, China in 2012. He has been a real ambassador of HKS Dallas, the Xchange and Texas. He helped me get set up in my new apartment aka Dallas Digs. The apartment is in the heart of downtown Dallas and in one of the newest and coolest buildings in town. So many people in the Dallas office worked on getting the apartment set up and it instantly felt like home. First meal in town was with Zack at a downtown Dallas institution: City Tavern.
Hi, I’m Mark Pataky. I’m an explorer by nature and this is the story of my HKS Xchange Fellowship in Dallas, TX.
The flat is lovely and is a loft style layout with a modern European flair (and the tiniest appliances I have ever used!) Melissa picked me up from my flat the next day and helped me maneuver through the crowded tube in the morning. Quite an experience since I am accustomed to getting in my car by myself in the morning and leisurely sipping my coffee on my way to work. We changed from the circle to the northern line and when we emerged above ground again we passed 20th Century Fox and Paul McCarthy’s office… she told me to keep my eye out for him!
I got here last weekend, but I have been doing so many things, seen so many places, met so many people, that I feel I have been here longer. Life goes fast in Shanghai, even more than in Mexico City! That has been my first impression… everyone is in a hurry, running everywhere… and now I am as well… I walk as fast as Chinese people now…=).
