Melissa Williams, HKS Salt Lake City

Hello again! ...I can’t believe that it’s already the final week of my time here in London. These last three months have been nothing short of incredible, and I’d like to thank HKS again for the opportunity to experience our firm abroad. In honor of everyone that has commented on my ‘top 10’ lists, I’m turning my entire final blog into a list of ‘fun facts’ I’ve learned while living in London:

Melissa Williams, HKS Salt Lake City

After two months of living abroad and working in our London office, I’m finally starting to feel like I’ve established a routine so that life feels less chaotic and (slightly) more normal. Somewhere around week 6, I began referring to the flat as “home,” which to me signals the mental transition between adjusting and adjusted. As further confirmation, I catch myself using ‘cheers’ rather than ‘thank you’ and pronouncing ‘week end’ as two distinct words.

Melissa Williams, HKS Salt Lake City

Hi everyone, Melissa Williams here in London for the Q3 Xchange! I’m a Utah transplant (originally from the Midwest), and you can normally find me in our Salt Lake City office. However, for the third quarter of this year, HKS has given me the opportunity to experience our firm abroad in the incredible city of London. I arrived just over a month ago to the Chelsea flat in proper London style—jetlagged in the back of a black cab—and was welcomed to my new home by Natasha Kemp. Previous London ‘Xchangers’ had clued me in about the poshness of the area, but I had no idea how lovely the flat itself would be. So, thanks to HKS, I get to spend the next three months living in the heart of Central London on the banks of the Thames, in easily the nicest place I’ve ever lived.

Lauren Stark, HKS Chicago

Hello! My name is Lauren from the HKS Chicago Office. Born and raised in North Carolina, I studied architecture at NC State (go pack!) and moved to Miami, FL for my Master’s degree from the University of Miami. I’ve since been a southern transplant surviving Midwest winters and working for HKS in the Windy City for the last three years.

As I prepare to leave familiar surrounds and head to new environs, new cultures, but supposedly the same language, (we shall see about that soon), I am reminded about the diversity we already enjoy in our own offices. Here is a glimpse of the studio in the Fort Worth office.

It’s difficult to sum up this amazing experience but as I write my final blog I look back at those moments that are the most memorable to me. Running along the Thames river was one of my favorite things to do after work and the weather permitted. It was fun running from the flat to Battersea Park along the river, over the bridge and back again.

Chapter 4 - Painting Dublin Green - Dublin during St. Patrick’s Day was a truly unique experience on this journey. Many people from around the world set foot on the green filled city. Although it was cold and windy along the River Liffey, it didn’t stop the thousands of people from taking part in the celebrations. My first stop was the Guinness Factory. After entering the giant wood doors, everyone rides the escalator up to the main floor which houses the gift shop and visitor center. Looking up was a sight filled with glass elevators moving people through the atrium space, and green light flying through the space from end to end.

Chapter 3 - Views from AboveSome of the most memorable experiences on my journey have been from above the cities I have visited.
