This past summer, HKS organized its first-ever Design Slam. This competition is a unique challenge that looks to use design as a solution to many global challenges, from poverty to climate change. Participating teams were asked to identify any problem in the world, and create a design solution for it. We received seven submissions from HKS offices around the globe. Each submission is truly unique and addresses a range of social issues, from gentrification in D.C., to transportation challenges in Mexico, slums in India, traffic in Atlanta, heat and public space in Phoenix and the aging population of China. Geraldo Palma Romero won the grand prize of $1,000.
In August 2014, young HKS thought-leaders gathered in the Dallas office to meet with senior leadership and envision impactful change for our firm and our future. The group focused on initiatives such as developing the whole architect, creating a culture of accountability, recruiting and retaining best talent, and integrating research with design.
This year’s DC Canstruction theme was ‘Playing with your Food.’ The team started the competition brainstorming ideas – soccer, musical instruments, Play-Doh, sand castle – trying to pick something that would be constructible out of only cans of food, provide the most cans for the Capital Area Food Bank and was the most fun. The final concept was ‘CANimal Cracker Box: The Great Escape,’ playing off of everyone’s fun memories of the Barnum’s Animal Crackers in the circus style box.
Team HKS took home the People's Choice Award! THANK YOU to those that voted for HKS' Girl Scout Cookie Box Creation!! http://www.gsnetx.org/default.aspx?tabid=200
Healthcare facility designers continue to further develop the concept of a healing environment, which includes the use of natural light, views of nature, strategic use of color and the elimination of noise, according to the experts judging this year’s Modern Healthcare Design awards. However, they note new hospitals will have to go way beyond that to stand out.
Just want to spread the word that there are some small architetural interesting competitions open for registration at the moment:
